Originally Kratos was just a demigod. He opened Pandora's box and gained Hope (the power to kill a god). He killed Ares and was made officially a god by Zeus and Athena in GOW. In GOW2 he loses all his godly powers (but not Hope) when he touches the blade of olympus and turns back to his former self (demigod). Pandora's box made him a god, but apart from that he also got the power of hope as shown in God of war 3 . The box was empty in 3 because Zeus just took his powers away but not the power of hope. Hope remained in kratos. Hope is a a huge power of its own , that's enough to kill a god (example : hades , Poseidon, Zeus).
